Grape harvest small ‘but good’ The size of this year’s vintage may be well down but winemakers around the Nelson region are hoping it will be high on quality after they completed harvesting this week. A cold December and dry summer has resulted in poor flowering and low yields throughout the region, with most growers reporting decreases of 30 to 50 per cent on last year. However, the low yields could well result in excellent wines with Waimea Estates general manager Ben Bolitho saying the vintage “is small, but it is great”. “The weather for the whole of spring was not optimal for wind-pollinated fruit,” Ben says. “It was cold, especially during early December when the vines were flowering, so this year we harvested just under 1350 tonnes compared with 2437 last year. “But the thing about a smaller yield is that the quality is really good with a high fruit concentration. On the back of a gold medal winning sauvignon blanc of 2014, we’re really looking forward to what this vintage will bring us.” Neudorf ’s viticulturalist Richard Flatman says their sauvignon blanc yields were down on average, with pinot noir and chardonnay also down.

Early finish to grape harvest FROM PAGE 1 “We only had 45 per cent of our average rainfall from July to December and it was cold and windy so the yields are down. But at this stage the fruit is looking really good.” Richard says it was also a season of firsts at Neudorf with the vineyard having its “first frost in 38 years” and the earliest start and finish to harvesting. Te Mania’s John Harrey says they planned to finish harvesting the last two or three varieties on their vineyards at the weekend and although yields were down “about 30 per cent on last year”, the quality was good. “A lot of the fruit has been very good quality but we would have

liked a little more. The fruit ripened very quickly too so we were putting in some long days to get it all harvested. But at least it’s looking better than it was at the start. It was cold and windy during flowering and we ended up with patchy fruit and open bunches.” John also says the rain that has been falling since Thursday has made the final stages of harvesting challenging with the threat of disease affecting the grapes. “We’ve been okay so far but the weather ahead is patchy so we’ll have to keep an eye on it and make a decision when to pick.” Richad says the new asexual strain of powdery mildew that hit a number of Marlborough vineyards had not been an issue in Nelson.

Speed limit at Lower Queen St ‘too high’ say residents FROM PAGE 1 a dangerous stretch of road but it has become a lot worse since the new traffic lights were installed. “Drivers have a free left turn (into Richmond Deviation) so they come up Lower Queen St to miss the lights on the State Highway,” Peter says. “Now there are so many trucks and cars going too fast and no footpaths.” Peter says he has sent “several submissions” to the Tasman District Council asking the 50kmh speed limit to be extended to “at least McShane Rd”, but has not had a response. Maxwell Clark and Shona McBride, who have lived on Lower Queen St for “just over 20 years” say they have also made submissions to council to lower the speed limit from 70kmh to 50kmh from the A & P Showgrounds to Nelson Pine Industries. “The traffic volume has increased immensely on this section of road in recent years,” Maxwell says. “Now residents find it unsafe entering or exiting their properties in this area and school children are taking their lives in their hands when they walk or cycle to school.” Shona, who has been hit by a car when pulling

Chris Tilley had his bike stolen on March 30 while Kevin Jourdain’s expensive kick bike was stolen on the same night. The pair still can’t believe that someone would come into the secluded village grounds and take their bikes. “I’m in shock really,” Kevin says. “I’m not happy at all - I have no other form of transport.” Kevin, who delivers the Waimea Weekly and is studying graphic design at NMIT, says he uses the kick bike for his work and personal transport to get from his home to Nelson. It’s the second time he has had a kick bike stolen. The first time it was taken, Jim Matthews from Village Cycles replaced it for free. Although Chris has got his bike back after it was seen lying in a ditch by a member of the public who reported it to the police, he is still angry that it was stolen.

Refund for some Air NZ passengers, others denied

Some passengers on the cancelled Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Nelson last month are threatening to go to television show Fair Go after they were denied compensation for accommodation costs – while others were refunded. Eddie Bradford, of Richmond, was on the flight and says he does not accept Air New Zealand’s reasons for the cancellation and he has written to them seeking a suitable response. “When you book a flight it is just like a contract, we honoured our side by paying $1100 up front but they didn’t honour their side of the agreement,” says Eddie. His frustration is further exasperated after hearing that an-

Craig Davies wrote an email complaining about the cancelled flight and the lack of service from Air New Zealand staff. He was refunded for his accommodation costs and credited with airpoints. But Eddie says he had no such luck. “We sent an email to Air New Zealand complaining about the lack of service and asked them why they had cancelled our flights from Auckland to Nelson.

They sent back what seemed like an automated response, saying passenger safety is paramount and that is why the flight was cancelled. “Because they have got the monopoly, they think they can just walk over everyone,” says Eddie. The Sunday afternoon flight was cancelled last month after it was delayed several times. Air New Zealand admitted that the reason the flight was cancelled was because they wanted the plane back in Auckland for the busy Monday morning flights, and poor weather meant they could have flown to Nelson but not back to Auckland that night. Air New Zealand did not respond in time for our print deadline.

A large crowd celebrated this year’s apple harvest at the annual Wakefield Apple Fair held last Sunday. Organisers of the event say they were thrilled to see a steady stream of people through the gates and estimate attendance had quadrupled in size compared with last year’s event. People were encouraged to bring along their own apples and join in the process of making juice using vintage machinery. There was a variety of applethemed activities throughout the day including apple bobbing, apple tasting and food stalls selling toffee apples, apple pie and apple jelly. “The day has been fantastic, there are lots more people here compared with last year, we are just blown away by the community support,” says organiser Amy Bucknall. The fair was held at Willow Bank Heritage Village, a private property owned by Christine Grieder and Kim John Kerslake. The property is host to 15 relocated and restored buildings which encompass a variety of

New ‘warrior’ race an instant classic

Hundreds of people ran, jumped, slid and swam around a muddy Wairua Warrior obstacle course on Saturday, giving the fledging event a great start. The race was held at Happy Valley Adventures in Cable Bay where entrants could compete in either a six kilometre obstacle course or a double lap at 12km. Event organiser Greg Witika says he is pleased with how the event took shape. “The day has been fantastic. We had a really good contingent of people coming

through for our first event.” He says he is already thinking ahead to next year’s course and making it an annual event. “We’ve already got a date locked in for next year. Wakefield suits new constable Wakefield’s new policeman, Peter Jackson, is enjoying the variety and community policing involved with working in a small town. Peter joined Marty Tutton at the Wakefield Police Station last November after long-serving senior constable Peter Cobbledick retired. Although Peter Jackson has spent most of his 19 years in the police force based in urban areas, he says he has always been interested in working in smaller communities like Wakefield. “It’s the sort of policing that appeals to me,” Peter says. “You get more time to talk to people and get involved with the community. “There’s only two of us here so you are not just another cop. You are more part of the community here and you have to take ownership of that community.” Peter joined the police in Wanganui before transferring to Nelson in 2004. He has worked in the Nelson and Richmond stations and has also had a twoand-a-half year stint in Greymouth. Peter’s wife, Robyn, is also in the police, which Peter says “can be interesting”. They met while doing service in the Solomon Islands. “When I was doing shift work, there were times when you don’t see each

other for quite a while. We also talk about work a lot and bounce ideas off each other, although sometimes she can’t say a lot because she’s in the CIB and some of her work is sensitive.” Peter says he joined the police “because, like everyone who joins, I wanted to make a difference. It’s a job I really enjoy and I wouldn’t do anything else.” He says he is quickly getting used to policing in a small town although he admits it does have some unique challenges. “I’d been a community constable and done Youth Aid before so I knew what to expect working in a smaller town. I’m really enjoying it because the people are generally helpful and we have a really good community here in Wakefield. “But it does have some disadvantages. We cover such a big area that you can spend a lot of time in the vehicles. “We are also relying more and more on cell phones and that can be frustrating too because the coverage out here is not always that good. I think you have to be more circumspect about things as well because you are sometimes on your own. But we get a lot of support from the locals like the fire brigade and you know they will step up for you if things get out of control.”

RSA ready for Poppy Day

Brittany Spencer Richmond-Waimea Returned Services Association volunteers will be selling the iconic ANZAC poppies throughout Richmond on Thursday, with the profits helping to pay the medical bills of their returned servicemen. Among the volunteers will be Gwen Carter, a 10 year member of the Women’s Section of the Richmond-Waimea Returned Services Association who remembers attending the ANZAC service with her parents ever since she was young. “My father was a farmer so couldn’t go to war, they needed the farmers here but he was in the home guard which, of course, trained at Rabbit Island. My uncle went to war and fortunately returned.” Gwen will be posted at the Richmond Mall with the rest of the RSA Ladies and she says she is looking forward to Poppy Day. “It is definitely rewarding. President of the Richmond-Waimea RSA Terry Richardson says poppy sales increased last year and he is hoping for good support again this year. “We nearly got 14,000 even though it was a terrible day, it really pelted down,” Terry says. “I think this year will be better if the day is fine.” Gwen also expects poppy sales to increase with this year’s centenary of the beginning of WWI. “There’s an increase in support of the RSA and ANZAC Day,” she says. “What’s being done this year for the centenary is just wonderful.” Gwen also recognises a greater awareness of ANZAC Day in the younger generations. “You see the young ones coming up to get a poppy, we make them feel special. It’s neat to think that the children want to wear a poppy.”

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Yep, reports of fish getting caught all over the place! Just outside the cut, in the cut (20 lb snapper), Cable bay, Delaware, Cape Soucis, French Pass, Bottle point, and above Durville Island, even out on the local groper grounds and all around. So, as predicated, the fish are in seasonal transit periods as water temperatures change within the Tasman Bay. Here lies the old saying "any bait in the water" will have a chance of catching a reasonable fish, as proven recently by club member Luke Dell who snaffled another 20 lb snap on a no current, low tide situation. Tasman Baysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fish population is starting to show signs of the massive 3-4 year perfect spawning conditions, with all species showing an increase in juvenile fish being caught at many locations. On this note, I personally would like to encourage Nelsonion fisho's to consider the option of "catch and release". I definitely am not saying to not take a feed of hardearned fish home to feed yourself, family and important others; however I am promoting the release of some of the bigger main breeding fish and in particular snapper and kingfish. There are already a lot

of very good fisherman practising catch and release principals and only really taking home enough to feed those on the boat for the day. There is just as much an adrenalin rush from having a hell demon fight with a big snapper or kingie, to then get a couple of quick photos and to watch them swim back down to the murky depths. Try it once, I am sure you will be amazed at the feeling of achievement and satisfaction. In particular, I would like to mention our king-fishery. We have potentially a world record size kingfish here, however it only takes one average-sized kingfish to feed four families. Although the limit is three per person per day, I would encourage people to only take one or two maximum if they happen to chance onto more than that in a day. Friday saw 84 entries into the singles competition which were whittled down to just 35 qualifiers with the semi-finals contested by Mike King verse Bevan Matthews, both from the Hornby Club, and Stephen Grant from Clubs of Marlborough verse Blair Woods from Hornby. In the end Mike and Blair won their respective semis with Mike taking out the final. Saturday started with 57 entries into the pair’s section with 25 qualifying. The semi-final came down to Bevan Matthew and Richard Hamilton from Hornby verse Robin Wolland and Vicky Osbourne from Richmond WMC, the end of the match saw the Hornby pair victorious. The other semi-final was a close game with both teams from Club Waimea; Lloyd and Rhonda Bellis verse John Kenmare and Lillian Adams. John was one up going into the last end, but Lloyd managed to get one shot so that meant and extra end. The toss was made and Lillian went first after the last bowl was played, both bowls were touching the jack, resulting in a drawn end. This required another extra end with John winning with his last bowl. The final match was contested by Hornby’s Bevan Matthew and Richard Hamilton verse John Kenmare and Lillian, with Club Waimea falling short of the win.

The triples section saw 14 teams qualify out of 35 with the semi finals between Mike King, David Philpott and Bev Diamond from Hornby, verse Jean McKenzie, MT Hooper and Mary Jordan from Club Waimea. The second semi was between Leo Ashby, D Morris and Eddie Ashby from Kaiapoi verse Maurice Berkeley, Kathleen Curtis and John Grey from Woolston. Maurice and Jean’s teams won their respective semis but in the end Maurice’s team took out the title. The final section in the competition was the fours, of which there were 28 teams and just 9 qualifiers. In the semi-finals, Leo Ashby, D Morris, E Ashby and J Beckingsale from Kaiapoi took on Maurice Berkeley, Kathleen Curtis, B Henry and John Grey from Woolston. The second match was between Robin Wolland, R Dalkie, V Osbourne and C Spicer from Richmond verses T Jones, G Severinsen, S Cooper and V Mathews from the Paparua Templeton Club with the teams of T Jones and Leo Ashby winning their respective semifinals. The final results from the fours section saw the Kaiapoi team winning first place. There were four first time winners of the weekend including Bevan Matthews, Richard Hamilton, Donald Morris and Janet Beckingsale, plus two gold star winners, Maurice Berkeley and Edward Ashby.

Club hopeful in Seddon tournament The Seddon Shield may not be a particularly serious competition, but Club Waimea’s darts group will no doubt plan on doing their best to win all the same. The Seddon Shield tournament encompasses all chartered clubs within the Seddon area; in fact it’s basically a Top of the South Island event with club’s entering from Marlborough, Nelson and even Hokitika. With a 27 year history, it’s an event that brings darts enthusiasts together for a fun tournament that is to be enjoyable as well as competitive. Club Waimea will be represented by around 20 competitors in a competition that numbers 110 overall. Day

one will see the ladies and men’s pairs play off for the title, followed by ladies and men’s singles on day two and finishing on day three with mixed pairs. Other awards are also available for best presented team, most improved junior and even a personality trophy. With a good haul last year, including wins in the ladies singles section, ladies pairs section, ladies pair plate round and a second in the mixed pairs, Club Waimea will be expecting a successful 2015 tournament. The Seddon Shield tournament is being hosted by Club Waimea over three days from Friday, April 1 until Sunday, April 3.

Club Waimea Annual General Meeting The Club Waimea AGM will be held on the Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 10am. Elections for the president, vice president and executive members will be advertised in May 2015. Two directors will be required to fill the positions made available by rotational retire-

ment. Those who are required to stand down can be reappointed should they wish to. The nominees will be interviewed by a selection panel and the impending recommendations will be taken to the membership for ratification at the AGM.

Craig Anderson has a long history in Richmond, 46 years to be precise, and things have changed a lot since it was established all those years ago. Several years after the practice began operating, Patrick Adamson started work there and he is now proud to say that he has been a chartered accountant with Craig Anderson for 30 years this April. new networking group Simon Bloomberg A new networking group for women who own or run smaller businesses in Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield and Mapua is starting later this month. Jessie Sutton of Curves Gym Stoke Richmond and Jacintha Atkinson from law firm McFadden McMeekin Phillips decided there was a need for the group after discussing the challenges facing women working in smaller local businesses. They formed a focus group of six women to develop the guidelines for the networking group which will be holding its first meeting at Curves Stoke Richmond on April 29. “I work in relative isolation so I thought it would be a good idea to form a network group for businesswomen like me,” Jessie says. “Jacintha is one of our clients and I talked to her about it and she was enthusiastic about it too so we set up the focus group.” The networking group will meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month and will be hosted by a different member business each time. Jacintha says it will be a chance for women to showcase their

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. businesses, services and products as well as network with each other. “There are a lot of smaller businesses in Richmond and Stoke but there are not a lot of support networks out that way so we saw an opportunity to set up a network.” Jacintha says the network will not have any joining fees and they will “move the meetings around the businesses” so that it doesn’t place any financial pressure on the businesses. “There’ll be no cost and it will be very informal.”

Jessie says the first meeting at Curves Stoke Richmond will include an opportunity, for those who are interested, to try out a free 30 minute gym circuit so women need to bring some suitable gym clothing. There will also be a draw for a free membership to the gym. The meeting will be held at the gym at 3 Elms St, Wakatu Estate starting at 7pm. Have you seen the cross on the hill? You most likely have if you’ve taken a drive anywhere north of Richmond in the evening over the past few weeks. It was pretty hard to miss. So here’s a question. Why would anyone go to the trouble of mounting a cross on hill overlooking Richmond and then light it up at night? That’s what I wanted to find out. So I took a drive up there one evening with a group of people from Grace Church (they are the culprits). I had only arrived in Richmond a few hours earlier and I was intrigued as to what this was all about. After navigating our way through a few gates and some stray cattle we made our way up the hill to where the cross was erected. It wasn’t quite dusk so I had some time to take in the view. It really was breathtaking. Beyond Tasman Bay there was the outline of Mt Arthur, the Moutere Hills and the faint lights of Motueka. And then to my right I could see Stoke, Tahunanui and Nelson South. And Peter Sommerville the new there beneath us lay the setpastor at Grace tlement of Richmond. Church. Would they notice the cross? Would it mean anything to them? Almost 2000 years ago, a man was impaled on a cross just like this, by a crowd of people who wanted him dead. His crime? He claimed to be the Son of God. It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? That’s what the crowd thought. Well, three days later he rose from the dead. And his body has never been found. Perhaps he wasn’t so crazy after all. I wonder what knowledge of Jesus you have? Who he is, why he came and what he did. I am constantly amazed how people are unaware of these things. Perhaps they think it doesn’t matter. It has no bearing on their lives. But that’s where they are wrong. Because what Jesus did on that cross has changed history forever. Jesus gives hope and joy and meaning to life and death. Some recommended reading would be the in Gospel of Luke in the Bible. Luke was an historian and knew what he was doing. You’ll find all you need to know there. Just remember, it’s not about religion. It’s about a person. And he’s very much alive.

Grandparents, parents and children have all been enjoying free entertainment at the Richmond Library these school holidays as part of the library’s April All Sorts. Aimed at four to nine year olds, the programme includes storytelling, interactive songs and arts and crafts. It was held on three days last week when it attracted 55 children. The children made everything from crowns, stuffed fish, animal masks, picture frames, dream

houses and more. Abbie Rolfe, 7, made a glittery pipe cleaner bouquet. “My favourite bit is doing the crafts”, says Abbie. The library has also been providing free holiday entertainment for teenagers with its Midweek Movie Magic. It hosted another viewing on Tuesday this week. Tania Clarke says her daughter was a bit bored at home so they went to last Tuesday’s Midweek Movie Magic and both really enjoyed it. “The kids get to help pick the

movie and I hadn’t seen it before so it was good”, says Tania. “It’s nice to get the kids out of the house and do something”. The Richmond Library is also running a ‘My Dream House’ project. Children are given templates for caravans, castles, lighthouses or hobbit holes and asked to decorate them into their ‘dream house’. Children’s librarian, Lucy Brunwin says the project will spark creativity and is expecting a large amount of colourful dream houses, which will be displayed at the Richmond Library next month.

The introduction to the sport has proven extremely popular and, at the end of the visits, the schools are invited to take part in a ‘Festival of Hockey’ competition to put their newly learnt skills to the test. This includes schools as far afield as Golden Bay and results in around 800 children gathering at the Saxton hockey turf to play the sport over two days. The school programme runs from February until the end of May and, along the way, those who wish to continue to play the sport can register to take part in the after-school junior hockey programme. Regional development manager for hockey, Craig Brett says that the numbers taking part in their afterschool programme have seriously increased; around nine years ago they were operating it with around 40 kids, now numbers have jumped to around 600. The after-school programme runs for 10 weeks, this year beginning on April 30. Because they are still running their school visits when the junior programme starts, registration into the programme has no cut-off date and, thanks to generous sponsorship from Heartland Bank, fees are extremely low. What makes the junior hockey programme even better for parents is that it is all run on a Thursday evening with no extra trainings to worry

about. The youngest level, Kindie Sticks, begins at 4:30pm and everything is wrapped up by 6:30pm. Children participating are mainly grouped according to schools and are placed under the guidance of Nelson hockey clubs who are responsible for uniforms and sourcing coaches, of whom 60 are involved with the upcoming junior programme. Unlike other sports, hockey is played year round thanks to artificial turf. Once the 10 week summer programme finishes, there is a short break before the winter season starts and, following that, children from the ages of eight and up are invited to take part in an extension programme which works on developing more skills. The players from these can then move into Under 11 representative programmes, or they can continue in a development program if they wish to remain playing at a social level. Hockey is a great sport for co-ordination, fitness and socialising, so if you are interested in involving your children in the sport, don’t hesitate to register them into the 10 week junior programme today. Wakefield dressage rider Frances Dick has made an encouraging start to her campaign to try and qualify for next year’s Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, recording a personal best score at the Horse of the Year in Hastings. Frances and her horse Weltie scored over 70 per cent in all their tests at the prestigious competition, held from March 17-22 to win the grade two para-equestrian championship. They started the Horse of the Year by finishing seventh in the elementary competition before scoring 71 per cent in the team test and 72 per cent in the championship test and freestyle test. It was the first time that Frances, 31, has exceeded that score indicating that she and Weltie are making good progress after teaming-up two years ago.

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. “The Horse of the Year was not a qualifying competition, but the national selectors want riders to be scoring 70 per cent in all disciplines, so it was great to achieve that,” Frances says. “There’s probably going to be a qualifying event in New Zealand at the end of the year and another one in Aus-

tralia in January next year so I’ll look at riding in one of those.” Frances is hoping it will be third time lucky after missing out on the Beijing and London Paralympics. “I qualified for Beijing but New Zealand didn’t send a team that year. I also qualified for London but they

selected two other riders to go so I’ve just missed out - it would be a dream come true if I made it to Rio.” Frances, who has a condition called hemiplegia which is paralysis to one side of the body with impaired muscle function, rides in the paraequestrian grade 2 category. Although she also competes in able-bodied dressage events, she says she has to adjust her riding style to compensate for her disability. “I don’t have too much feeling in my right side which makes it quite challenging. Weltie has had to adjust to that too but he’s done that very well - he’s always wanting to please you.” In addition to having a good horse, Frances says she is also fortunate to have a great network of supporters including her parents Yvette and Phil, grandmother Dorothy and coach Rachel Thomas. She says the Sports Nelson Tasman Trust, Nelson Dressage Group and Farmlands are also key supporters.

The father and son pairing of Mark and Henry Jaine were the fastest riders in Saturday’s Port Nelson Kaiteriteri Six-Hour Mountainbike Relay Race but it was the solo riders who endured the most pain and the teams in fancy dress who had the most fun. Mark and Henry completed 16 laps of the 7.5km circuit around the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park with Henry, 18, also recording the fastest lap of the day at 19min 8sec. Although Henry was riding two laps to his father’s one, Mark still contributed, consistently recording fast 22 minute laps to help them complete a hattrick of wins in team’s races at Kaiteriteri. “I’m getting slower and Henry’s getting faster, but we still managed to win,” Mark says. “But it will be my last race for a while because I’m getting a shoulder reconstruction next

There were plenty of hugs and kisses awaiting competitors as they crossed the finish line of the McFadden McMeekan Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triathlon last weekend. Around 250 women competed in the event which is aimed towards women of all abilities from beginners to more serious athletes and includes a 5km run or 3km walk, 14km cycle and four lengths of the Riverside Pool. In its 28th year, the race is seen as a starter into triathlons by many, which was confirmed by 62 first time competitors. “We were really pleased with the event, everyone seemed relaxed and people were having fun, it was lovely to see families waiting for their competitor to come in and giving them lots of hugs and kisses as they crossed the finish line,” says organiser, Amanda Dykzeul. There were also a lot of women who had competed in the event many times over the years with four entered in the 70 years age group. She has completed the race around ten times and won the over 60 years age group a couple of times before taking a hiatus from the event for eight years. She decided to have another go in the over 70s category this year. “I do a lot of biking and play tennis and have just completed the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail and my fitness is okay, so I decided to enter again. I really enjoyed the event, everyone was so nice, it was lovely talking to the younger ones while waiting for the start who were first timers and so excited about it. It is great to see people getting out there and doing it,”

says Marion. Zoe King won the run section, with Renee Hunt and Kiri Williams not far behind her. It was a race to the finish line in the walk section, with previous winner, Richmond’s Margaret Oliver beaten at the post by Blenheim’s Lisa Johnston. In the team section, the NBS Workmates Run Challenge was won by Jamiee Erskine and Jo Perrott from Riverside Pool and Nelson Radiology’s Julie Slade and Karina Murray won the walk. A standing ovation was given to the last competitor. “It was really nice that she finished it, I bet she was so pleased with herself,” says Marion.

There was an upset in the rugby league results, with the Wanderers Wolves beating the Richmond Rabbits 28 to 16 at Ngawhatu Park last weekend. Waimea aiming for perfect first round of competition Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys will be aiming to maintain the momentum they gained in the second half of last week’s 35-13 win against Stoke when they play Nelson in their Tasman Trophy and Car Company Nelson Bays division one club rugby game at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Waimea Old Boys produced a strong second half performance, scoring four tries to finally dispatch a tenacious Stoke and record their fourth successive win. But it was far from a perfect display with coach Mark Milne saying they lost too much possession in a muddling first half before tightening up in the second. “Stoke came to play in the first half but we also failed to hold onto the ball. We’d do a lot of good stuff and then we’d lose the ball so we need to improve on that this Saturday.

“I don’t know why we didn’t get it right. It was probably just a mental thing so we have put a few things in front of the guys to focus for this week.” Mark says he was pleased with the way first five-eighth Rohan Saifoloi “ran our game” while openside flanker Sam Winslow “had a strong game”. “Sam had glandular fever last year so he didn’t really get going. He’s a very talented player so it’s pleasing to see him starting to play some very good rugby.” Mark says the team is looking forward to playing at home this Saturday. The game kicks off at 3.15pm. Waimea Old Boys Senior B won last Saturday’s game against Stoke 45-3. They play Nelson Senior B this Saturday, with kick-off timed for 1.15pm.

Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially before being asked to work on their own. Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund Does your sports team have places to go and games to win? The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund is aimed making it easier for young people living in rural communities to participate in team sports. The fund can help subsidise travel costs for junior teams to enable them to take part in local sports competition. It is targeted at young people aged between 5-19 years. Who is eligible? The Rural Travel Fund is open to support rural sports clubs and rural school teams with players aged between 5-19 years.
